Racial Discrimination - Luiza Iddrisova

Racism is a clear reality in our society that affects everyone. Everyday individuals are discriminated by other cultures and races for different reasons. People are so quick to judge based on skin colour, religion, nationality, gender, sexual orientation or age. There have been arguments whether or not everyone should have equal rights. There have been cases where people from different race were not served or poorly treated in a restaurant. Nine in ten people believe everyone should be treated equally, no matter what their race is. Here are some stories which tell us how racism has taken over our world.

It was a hot summer day on the beach, in Turkey. The sun was setting down as Luiza’s family was about to leave. Her mom heard a harsh voice of a man, “I’m not using this towel anymore! You touched it!” Luiza’s mom and Aliya, who is a family friend, rushed over to see what’s going on and they see Asyl, who is Aliya’s son, being screamed at by the man. As Asyl’s mom was shouting back at the man, he threw the towel on the sand. She got really mad. “How racist are you? Don’t you dare shout at my son!” Asyl was just standing still as Luiza’s mom calmed Alya down. The man didn’t want to use the towel because Asyl’s skin color is different.

It was just an ordinary day, middle schoolers rushing in the corridors, chatting and gossipping as a boy came up to Alikhan. He was racially discriminated. He was called a terrorist because he’s from Kazakhstan and he’s a muslim. Alikhan just ignored that boy and tried not to care. But a lot of people think that all muslims are terrorists, which is heart breaking. Just because a few terrorist attacks were made by muslims doesn’t mean that every muslim is a terrorist.

A hot summer day, Katherine saw a van of ice cream. She quickly jogged to line up in the queue. She was the first one in the queue and the lady who sold ice cream let all white people behind her, go in front. The lady didn’t let her be the first one to get ice cream because of her skin color. She waited for everyone to get ice cream, and only when all the white people got their ice cream, the lady let her get it. She couldn’t be the first one to get ice cream because she’s asian.

When Luiza was younger, she saw a girl in grade above being made fun of by a guy because of her religious beliefs. She wore a necklace which said ‘Allah’. He started touching the necklace and cursing, he said, “stop wasting your time believing in God. He doesn’t exist.” He kept telling her not to believe in God and made fun of her telling everyone how dumb she is because of her beliefs. All people have their own choice whether to believe in God or not. No one has the right to change your way of thinking about certain things.

It’s sad seeing people being discriminated because of their skin color, beliefs or nationality. It really shows us how low some people have become nowadays. Children are being bullied in school, adults are not getting jobs or getting low income. Many people believe the stereotype that all muslims are terrorists, but this is an old fashioned and outdated thought as terrorists are people, and not an entire faith. What can we do to stop racism?
